NEW DELHI: Top seed D. Harika scored an important victory over Spain’s eighth seed Sabrina Vega to move within half a point of leader Vera Nebolsina of Russia after the girls’ eighth round of the World junior chess championship at Yerevan, Armenia, on Thursday. Harika’s 37-move triumph raised her tally to 6.5 points that helped her temporarily tie with Vera. Later, Vera drew with Mongolia’s Bathuyag Mongontuul to move to seven points. Five rounds remain in the competition. On what turned out to be a very productive day for the Indian girls, seventh-seeded Eesha Karavade brightened her medal hopes by beating Russia’s Tatevik Airapetian in 38 moves. The results (eighth round, involving Indians): Open: Maxim Rodshtein (Isr, 5.5) drew with Parimarjan Negi (5.5). Georg Meier (Ger, 6); Sasha Kaplan (Isr, 5) drew with Aswin Jayaram (5); Yuri Vovk (Ukr, 4.5) drew with Abhijeet Gupta (5). Krzysztof Bulski (Pol, 4.5) drew with Deepan Chakkravarthy (4.5); G. Rohit (5) bt David Kalashian (Arm, 4). Filip Pancevski (Mkd, 3.5) bt Abhishek Das (2.5); Mahmoud Shamieh (Lib, 2.5) lost to Arun Karthik (3.5). Girls: D. Harika (6.5) bt Sabrina Vega (Esp, 6); Tatevik Airapetian (Rus, 5) lost to Eesha Karavade (6). Elena Tairova (Rus, 5) bt Padmini Rout (4); Marine Grigorian (Rus, 4) lost to Mary Ann Gomes (5).
