Hussain scores Qatar’s winner

Cameroon holds Germany

HYDERABAD: Qatar played a well planned and tactically superior game but had to be content with a solitary goal win over India in the Group B league of the football tournament of the Military World Games here on Friday.

Although Qatar dominated the proceedings for long periods it failed to notch up a big win partly because India’s defensive tactics paid off to some extent.

Short passes

India’s game was marked by short passes and close marking for the major portion of the match.

However, while attacking, the home team failed to come up with imaginative moves and create the necessary openings.

Midway through the first half Qatar’s Ahmad Ali had a great chance when he outran a pursuing defender on a solo run down the centre.

The danger was thwarted by a timely charge by the Indian goalie Robi who came out and robbed the attacker of the ball before clearing it.

Later it was India which got a good chance as Nguruilal made a good run along the right flank and cut into the box but then he ended up shooting well wide of the target.

At half time the teams were locked goalless.

In the second session the match went along the similar lines till the Indian citadel fell late in the 52nd minute.

RK Singh brought down Abdulla Hussain with a hard tackle inside the box and referee Aienne of Cameroon had no hesitation in awarding a spot kick.

Hussain easily banged the ball home to give his team the match winner.

Big win for Brazil

In another match in the same Group Brazil defeated Afghanistan 6-0.

In a Group A Egypt beat Canada 5-1 and Guinea Republic drew with Ireland 1-1.

In a Group C match Germany came from behind to hold Cameroon to a 1-1 draw.

It was also announced that six teams will take part in the women’s football competitions of the Games.

USA, DPR Korea and Germany are the teams in Group A while Netherlands, Canada and France are in Group B.

The top two from each Group will play in the semifinals.
