Ratnika in two finals

NEW DELHI: Ratnika Batra made it to both the singles finals of the girls section in the DSCL National sub-junior tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here on Friday.

The 13-year-old Ratnika, a student of Bal Bharati Public School, Pitampura, who shuttles between Rohini and Siri Fort Sports Complex for her tennis lessons every day, was quite fluent and dropped only nine games in the two matches on way to the finals in the under-16 and 14 sections.

In the under-16 final, Ratnika will meet Ankita Raina who ousted the second-seeded Rishika Sunkara in the other semifinal. She will be challenged by Natasha Palha in the other final.

In the boys’ section, Shiva Sangwan beat Jugal Marfatia. He may have his hands full when he meets Prateek Bhambri who lost his way at 6-3, 5-2, while serving for the match, but put it across a fighting S. Siddharth in three sets, recovering from 2-4 in the decider.

The results: Boys: U-16: Shiva Sangwan bt Jugal Marfatia 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4; Prateek Bhambri bt S. Siddharth 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. Doubles (final): Rohit Bisht & Saurabh Singh bt Shahbaaz Khan & S.V. Abhishek 6-3, 5-7, 12-10.

U-14: Rohit Bisht bt Ronit Bisht 7-6(4), 6-3; Mohit Mayur bt Siddharth Rawat 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Doubles (final): Ronit Bisht and Digvijay Singh bt R. Ramkuar and Rakshay Thakkar 6-1, 6-1.

Girls: U-16: Ratnika Batra bt Sharon Paul 6-3, 6-0; Ankita Raina bt Rishika Sunkara 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Doubles (final): Prerna Bhambri & Gopika Kapoor bt Nimisha Mohan & Arushi Sharma 6-4, 6-2.

U-14: Ratnika Batra bt Ankita Raina 6-0, 7-6(4); Natasha Palha bt Shweta Chandra Rana 6-3, 7-6(3). Doubles (final): Vaidehi Bhagwat and Prarthana Thombre bt B. Sowjanya and C. H. Nidhi 6-2, 1-6, 10-5.
