TIRUPUR: A novel scheme introduced by Coimbatore district administration to sensitise rural people on Government-sponsored loan schemes and creating easy credit access for them received overwhelming response from the public in all the six blocks - Pollachi (north and south), Anamalai, Udumalpet, Madathukulam and Gudimangalam.
Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N. Palanisamy launched the scheme at Pollachi on Thursday in the presence of District Collector Neeraj Mittal.
Mr. Palanisamy said it was a welcome change that banks were going to the doorsteps of people instead of public approaching banks. In Coimbatore district, agricultural loans were given to the tune of Rs. 2,139 crore through 457 branches. Mr. Palanisamy said a sum of Rs. 2,139 crore was extended to the public towards priority sector credit while the banks had distributed Rs. 223 crore towards educational loan.
Appealing to the bankers to show sympathy to the poor in extending credit, Mr. Palanisamy also asked the bankers not to drag poor applicants for a longer period. Urging the educated youth to start own ventures, he asked the youth to avail themselves of Prime Minister’s Self-Employment Scheme, under which they could get Rs. 2 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh.
Lauding the self-help groups for their prompt repayment of various loans, Mr. Mittal asked other borrowers to repay the loan without fail. Repayment of loan by the public would prompt the bankers to extend more and to achieve targets fixed in the district-level annual credit plan for various priority sectors.
The Collector said that the applicants should be fully aware of various loans extended by banks with Government assistance. They should be clear for which loan they were applying and should furnish all the documents required by the banks.
Nearly 5,000 applicants submitted their requests in Pollachi north and south unions, while 1,461 submitted applications in Udumalpet. In Madathukulam, a total of 1,270 applications seeking various loans were submitted and it was more than 1,000 in Anamalai and Gudimangalam.
Lead Bank Manager, Canara Bank, P.T. Kalaiselvan, who coordinated the camp in Madathukulam, said acknowledgements were issued to all the applicants.
