Pamphlets on precautionary measures are being distributed, says R. Rajaram The Tiruchi Rural Police have stepped up night patrolling in Tiruverumbur, Navalpattu and Kollidam police station limits following sporadic incidents of property crimes reported in these places in the recent past. The authorities have drawn extra manpower from the Armed Reserve /Tamil Nadu Special Police to augment the night round strength and enhance vigil in the odd hours to prevent offences including house break-ins and chain-snatching incidents. The police have simultaneously embarked on a sensitisation campaign enlisting the cooperation of the public in prevention of crimes. Pamphlets containing a detailed list of the precautionary measures to be adopted are being distributed to residents in Tiruverumbur, Navalpattu and Kollidam limits. With proliferation of residential colonies in Tiruverumbur and Kollidam owing to their proximity to the city, locked houses in isolated pockets often become easy targets for criminals. Basing their argument on recent crime pattern, police say house break-ins have been reported in Kollidam and chain-snatchings in Navalpattu where houses in isolated pockets look vulnerable even during the day. Recent crimes include a robbery at People’s Nagar near Tiruverumbur where two culprits attacked a couple and made good their escape with 10 sovereigns of gold chain; couple of chain snatchings in Police Colony and Anna Nagar in Navalpattu; a house break-in case at Lakshmi Nagar No. 1 Tollgate in the outskirts of the city where a gold chain weighing 14 sovereigns was reported stolen when the inmates were away. Investigations are on in these cases. In the last six months, six house break-ins were reported in Kollidam limits. Four cases have been solved so far. Sources say focus is on identified “crime prone” areas where policemen were deployed for patrolling on motorcycles. Equipped with walkie-talkie sets, policemen involved in “bike patrolling” have been assigned specific areas for night patrol. This apart, patrol parties with plainclothesmen are on duty during day time. The fast developing Tiruverumbur and Navalpattu require closer vigil but given the vastness of the area law enforcers were trying to supplement crime prevention measures by enlisting public cooperation. Around 3,000 pamphlets have been readied for mass circulation, says Tiruchi Rural Superintendent of Police N. Rajasekaran. The vigil had been stepped up to prevent recurrence of crimes. In all, around 60 police personnel have been deployed for night rounds in these areas. More number of motorcycle patrols have been organised on the instruction of Inspector General of Police, Central Zone I. Raja for visible policing, he adds. Four special police teams have been formed to exclusively keep a watch on the activities of the criminals released recently and active criminals. After the night rounds were stepped up during the past week, the police have recovered 20 stolen two-wheelers besides nabbing two chain snatchers and three burglars in Tiruverumbur, the SP said.
