USURPATION: Private vehicles parked at Arignar Anna Bus Stand, Tambaram, on Thursday. — TAMBARAM: Replying to a query from a citizens group under the provisions of the Right to Information Act, the Tambaram Municipality made it clear that it had not permitted private vehicles to park inside the Arignar Anna Bus Stand. But ground realities at the bus stand present a different picture. Citizens groups, while vowing to struggle to ensure that the bus stand is used only by government buses, have criticised the Metropolitan Transport Corporation, the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply and the police for the present condition of the facility. In August, convener of Makkal Maamandram A. Panneerselvam sent a bunch of questions to the Tambaram Municipality under the provisions of the RTI Act on the status of the Arignar Anna Bus Stand. In its reply, the local body said the facility was spread over half-an-acre. To another question, it said the local body had not permitted or created facilities for parking of private vehicles, including two-wheelers and cars. Listing the names of contractors who had taken municipal buildings on lease, the reply said access to these places was only from Muthurangam Street and not from the Grand Southern Trunk Road. The reply said that buses were using the facility and as it was not adequate, additional shelters were built on the GST Road. However, during most part of the day, the bus stand is taken over by cars and jeeps, including those belonging to elected representatives, political parties and even government officials. Not only was the parking of private vehicles here blatantly illegal but also a major traffic problem in Tambaram, Mr. Panneerselvam said. The controversy surrounding this bus stand has been raging for some months now, ever since the municipality placed barricades to prevent parking of private vehicles there. Initially, residents welcomed the initiative, but were let down when private vehicles started entering again recently. Crew of MTC buses passing through the town said they had instructions from both the headquarters and the Tambaram depot not to enter the bus stand, but instead, halt only on the carriageway of the GST Road to pick up waiting commuters. “The commitment of the Tambaram Municipality on the status of Arignar Anna Bus Stand has now become clear. At least from now on, the Transport Department, the police and the municipality should ensure that the facility is used to park only MTC buses,” Mr. Panneerselvam said. Policemen said they had placed barricades so that only MTC buses could enter the bus stand easily.
