Doctors’ strike illegal, says Health Secretary

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Secretary Biswas Mehta said here on Friday that action would be taken against government doctors keeping away from official duties as part of their work to rule agitation.

The doctors have not been attending official duties other than treatment of patients for more than a week now.

The Secretary said the doctors under the Health Department were required to do all duties assigned to them by the government.

Attendance at medical camps and programmes directly or indirectly organised by the government would be treated as part of the doctors’ duty besides VIP duty and Sabarimala duty.

Dr. Mehta said the government viewed the refusal of the doctors to do certain duties citing them as ‘other duties’ seriously.

Action would be taken against them in public interest under the Kerala Civil Service (CC and A) Rules, 1960.

He added that the observations of the Supreme Court of India in respect to the recent strike by doctors at the All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, were significant in this regard.

Court view

The Court had observed that the agitations disrupting health services were illegal.

So, the work to rule agitation by doctors here too was illegal.
