MEMORIAL: Anti-Coca-Cola agitators salute a granite sculpture installed in front of the Coca-Cola unit at Plachimada as a memorial for the 2,000-day-long agitation demanding the shutting down of the plant, on Friday. PALAKKAD: An agitation demanding the permanent closure of the Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Ltd. bottling plant at Plachimada in Chittur taluk completed 2,000 days on Friday. A seminar and a public meeting were held in this connection in front of the factory. As a monument to this heroic agitation, a sculpture depicting the suffering and resistance of the agitating people was installed close to the pandal where the protesters stage a Satyagraha. The sculpture, by artist Mohanan of Balussery in granite, was installed by T. Shobendran, environmentalist. Two granite stupas, cube-like blocks placed one upon another, have a grave yet graceful quality to them. Around these stupas are grave faces, weary with misery and suffering, yet beaming with compassion and transcendence. They brim with pain, yet pulsate with the spirit of resistance. These figures entwine themselves, as if spiralling upward in a prayer to the beyond, as if leaping towards states more human and just, said C.S. Venkiteswaran, art critic. A seminar on “Globalisation and corporatisation and the experience from Plachimada” was inaugurated by Vilayodi Venugopal, chairperson, Plachimada Anti-Coca-Cola Agitation Committee.
