‘Andhra Pradesh is transforming into Kreedandhra Pradesh’ HYDERABAD: The importance of fitness for sporting excellence was aptly stressed at the inaugural session of the two-day pre-Military World Games Scientific Conference with the theme of Physical and Mental prowess for better living, organised by Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh as a curtain-raiser for the mega sporting event commencing on Sunday, at JNTU here on Friday. Maj. Gen.S.N.Mukherjee, Vice Chancellor of Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (Gwalior), quoted the Greek philosopher Aristotle to remind that the body is the temple of the soul and to reach harmony of body, mind and spirit, the body must be physically fit. “This is the guiding principle even today for any sportsperson to achieve excellence at the highest level,” he asserted. “This is a competitive world and unless there is extensive research on these fitness aspects, it is difficult to win medals and more importantly to sustain excellence,” he explained. Maj. Gen. Mukherjee said that in the UK physical education was mandatory from primary school onwards. “This should be implemented in India and particularly in Andhra Pradesh which is transforming into Kreedandhra Pradesh,” he added. “The trends are changing. Gone are the days when the spirit of Olympic Games – participation and not winning - was the motto. Today’s sportspersons are determined to achieve high level performances by adopting a multidisciplinary approach on key areas including fitness and mental toughness,” he remarked. Dr.Uday Kumar Reddy, Secretary, Indian Stress Management (AP), demonstrated the software on the subject for better awareness in society. Dr.Sunder Raj Urs, Principal, University College of Physical Education (Bangalore), explained the need of dance and the co-relationship between sport and dance. In a rhythmic way all actions and dances are part of physical and mental activity, he said. Sports Minister R.Damodar Reddy appreciated the efforts of SAAP, especially Chinnappa Reddy, who is also the technical advisor to the State Government on sports and physical education.
