Ban on Janmat TV goes

NEW DELHI: The Union Information & Broadcasting Ministry on Friday decided to revoke the ban on Janmat TV from midnight on Friday, eight days ahead of schedule. The decision was taken after the channel managers committed themselves to adhering to the Programme Code in letter and spirit, and in view of their plea that the ban had put a question mark on the commercial viability of Janmat TV.

The channel had been banned on September 20 for a month for airing a fake sting operation showing a government schoolteacher of the Capital forcing a student into prostitution. The telecast had led to rioting near the school and the arrest and dismissal of the teacher. The teacher, Uma Khurana, has since been granted bail.

In their appeal, Broadcast Initiatives Limited — distributor and uplinking applicant of Janmat TV — said there was no deliberate attempt to defame anybody by telecasting the sting operation.
