PUDUCHERRY: A total of seven trade unions, rallying under the umbrella organisation of Puducherry All Unions Textile Mills Protection Committee, have urged the government to earmark Rs.100 crore for modernisation of Swadeshi Cotton Mills (SCM) and Swadeshi Bharathi Mills (SBM) in the Union Territory. President of the committee V.S. Abishekam said in a statement here on Saturday that leaders of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), National Labour Organisation (NLO), Labour Progressive Federation (LPF), Anna Thozhirchanga Peravai (ATP), Pattali Thozhirchangam (PTC) and Urimai Sangam (US) took part in a meeting here on Thursday to discuss issues related to the welfare of the workers of SCM and SBM. Stressing the need for modernising and upgrading the SCM and SBM, the meeting said in a resolution that investing Rs.100 crore for this purpose would provide employment to 3,000 people. It would be detrimental to the economy and the scope for expanding the employment opportunity if the government decided to wind up production in the mills citing the recommendations of South India Textile Research Association. The trade unions also demanded disbursement of bonus on a par with the amount given to the workers of Anglo-French Textile Mill.
