Protest against liquor shop in residential area

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Residents of Pushp Vihar in South Delhi staged a sit-in protest at the Sector IV market here on Saturday demanding closure of a Delhi Government-owned liquor shop in the area which was causing trouble, especially to women.

Leading the protest, Saket MLA Vijay Jolly and Municipal Councillor M. Nagarajan said the liquor shop had led to a law and order problem in the area as anti-social elements gather at the vend and create problems.

Addressing the dharna, which saw participation of many senior citizens and women, Mr. Jolly said: “The parks in the area are found littered with empty liquor bottles every morning and young women are targeted by the alcoholics who pass lewd comments or make obscene gestures. With poor street lighting, chain snatching in the area has increased.”

Criticising the liquor policy, Mr. Jolly said while the Government had failed to provide drinking water, it was opening liquor shops all over. He lamented that while granting permission for a liquor shop, the views of the local MLA or Councillor were not considered.

Mr. Jolly said the Government’s reported plan to have one country liquor vend per one lakh people and a foreign liquor vend per 34,000 people would spell disaster for the city though the Government would stand to earn crores of rupees in revenue. Last year, the Government had earned Rs.1,014 crore in revenue from liquor shops.
