‘Mela’ organised jointly by district administration and bank
PERAMBALUR: Forty-eight students got loans to the tune of Rs.61.48 lakh at a special ‘educational loan mela’ organised jointly by the district administration and Indian Overseas Bank, the lead bank for the district, here on Saturday.
State Bank of India sanctioned a maximum of Rs.30 lakh to 20 students followed by Indian Overseas Bank’s sanction of Rs.15.70 lakh to 14 students, Indian Bank’s Rs.10.20 lakh to nine students and Canara Bank’s sanction of Rs.5.58 lakh to five students. The ‘mela’ also marked the receiving of fresh applications from students. In all, 916 students submitted their applications.
Distributing the cheques to the students, Collector Anil Meshram said 57 branches of various banks in the district had so far sanctioned educational loan to the tune of Rs.7.62 crore. A decision to conduct the ‘mela’ was taken to expedite the process of sanctioning loans to the students. The applications received at the ‘mela’ would be sent to the branch concerned under the service area norms.
He also appealed to bank officials to come to the rescue of a large number of students belonging to the economically weaker sections by sanctioning more loans.
Senior Regional Manager, Indian Overseas Bank, Thanjavur, T. Veerappan said the applications would be processed expeditiously and the Lead Bank Office in Perambalur would inform the applicants the details about the branch to be contacted, the quantum of loan and other particulars. The applicants could also seek any clarification from the Lead Bank Officer in Renga Nagar in Perambalur.
District Revenue Officer P. Sankar, Special District Revenue Officer (Land Acquisition) M. Narayanan and Divisional Manager of Canara Bank, Tiruchi, Swaminathan participated.
