Team inspects 129-year-old middle school building

Special Correspondent

FOLLOWING COURT ORDER: Advocate Commissioner S.Murugaiyan (third from right) and Additional Public Prosecutor Geetha inspect the Muslim Middle School in Tindivanam on Saturday.

TINDIVANAM: Advocate Commissioner S. Murugaiyan, appointed by the Madras High Court, and structural engineer of Procter and Gamble V. Sundararajulu, inspected the 129-year-old Muslim Middle School building here on Saturday.

The High Court ordered the inspection following contradictory views about the stability of the structure. The Vedavalli Ammal Trust that stakes claim to the property and the Tindivanam Town Education and People Development Society have favoured its demolition or shifting the school elsewhere. According to the Executive Engineer of Public Works Department, who inspected the building on September 19, the building was very weak and damaged.

“An inspection by the PWD in 2003 said the building was dilapidated and may collapse any time. Therefore, considering the safety of students and teachers, it is better to shift the school to a safer place,” he said.

However, Rajabather, secretary of Tagore Educational Trust that runs the school, said the Additional Assistant Elementary Educational Officer and Assistant Elementary Educational Officer, after an inspection on February 7, 2007, found the building and classrooms safe. Therefore, the High Court directed Mr. Murugaiyan to take the help of an independent structural engineer to ascertain the condition of the building. Mr. Murugaiyan will submit a report to the court on Monday.
