Irular sangham plea to Chief Minister

Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE: The Pazhankudi Irular Padhukappu Sangham has urged the State government to take action against those who had unleashed violence and torched the houses of five Irulas at Korathi in Panruti taluk.

In a plea to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, general secretary of the sangham S. Arumugham said that following a fire on September 4, the Inspector General and the Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Social Justice and Human Rights Wing visited the village and conducted an enquiry. Earlier, a fact-finding committee headed by advocate Vaitheeswaran had blamed certain persons for the fire. However, no arrests were made. The sangham alleged that the Irulas were getting a raw deal from certain communities and the police.

Out of the 13 allegations of atrocities against the Irulas, cases were booked only in five cases. In the remaining cases, the police took the complainants to task, thereby making the victims the accused .

Condemning the inaction of law-enforcing authorities, the sangham staged a demonstration here on Friday.
