National identity cards to be issued to the disabled

THENI: A special medical camp for issuance of national identity cards to the disabled will be held periodically in all panchayat union offices on or before October 30, according to Collector Har Sahay Meena.
Inaugurating the first medical camp at Bodinayakkanur near here on Friday, he said that the main aim of the camp was to identify all the eligible disabled in the district and issue identity cards to them. Such card will help the disabled avail specially designed schemes for their welfare and uplift. Wide publicity would also be given about the camps to enable all the disabled to attend the camp.
A total of 152 participants, including 27 disabled, 31 deaf, 50 mentally retarded, nine blind and 10 persons having eye defects took part. Fifteen persons were recommended for advanced treatment.
Eye specialist S. Ganapathy Rajesh, ENT specialist K. Jayaraman, psychiatrist Sankaranarayanan and ortho specialist D. Umesh and psychologist Mohamjmad Safi treated the patients.
Earlier, Mr. Meena oversaw the development works being taken up in Bodi union at an estimated cost of Rs.2.98 crore. Priority was given for drinking water projects and safe disposal of waste.
Maintenance of overhead and ground-level tanks, replacement of old pipelines with new ones and laying distribution pipelines would be completed shortly. On completion of this project, Bodi municipality would get 20 lakh litres of water in addition to the existing water supply, he added.
