Marriages with close blood relations a reason for disability
581 people screened in special camps
Free aids and appliances will be distributed
Dharmapuri: The Central and State Governments were implementing several schemes with the objective of mainstreaming and empowering people with disabilities, Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal has said.
Speaking at a screening camp for disabled at Pennagaram near here on Saturday, the Collector said that National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Multiple Disabilities (NIEPMD) had distributed aids and appliances to the tune of Rs.3.35 lakh to people with disabilities in a special camp held at Dharmapuri last month. Mr. Bansal said that District Disabled and Rehabilitation Office and NIEPMD screened 581 people in special camps held at Morapur, Pennagaram and Pappireddipatti recently.
Evaluation
Aids and appliances would be distributed free of cost to the needy and eligible persons with disabilities after proper assessment and evaluation, he said.
The Collector said that equipment such as prostheses and orthoses, tricycles, wheel chair, surgical footwear and devices for activities of daily living, learning equipments (Braille writing equipments, Dictaphone, CD player/tape recorder), low vision aids, special mobility aids like canes for blind, hearing aids, educational kits and communication aids to people with multiple disabilities would be provided to eligible persons on November 22.
Marriages with close blood relations were also a major reason for disability.
The district administration would create awareness among people in this regard, the Collector added.
