BJP plea to develop ports

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lakshadweep unit president K.P. Muthu Koya has urged the Union government to develop ports of Mangalore, Azheekal, Beypore and Kollam to facilitate berthing of small ships from Lakshadweep.

The Union government should sanction funds for development of the ports, he said in a memorandum submitted to the Administrator of Lakshadweep..

Mr. Muthu Koya urged the Union government to release funds for constructing a ship as per recommendations made by the National Shipping Board.

Commodities’ shortage

He alleged that Lakshadweep was facing shortage of commodities arising out of lack of transport facilities to the islands.

Two ferry vessels from Lakshadweep have been remaining berthed in Kochi for repairs for more than two months. He said steps had not been initiated for bringing back the vessels to the islands.

The BJP activists staged a dharna in front of the office of Lakshadweep Administration in Kochi on Friday to highlight the problems faced by the people of the islands.
