‘Corruption biggest obstacle to progress’

Special Correspondent

Kochi: The former judge of the Supreme Court and Karnataka Lok Ayukta N. Santhosh Hegde has said society should play a proactive role in combating corruption.

Delivering the Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan Memorial Lecture organised by the Indian Socialist Lawyers’ Organisation here, he said society should show a “zero tolerance” towards corruption. Corrupt people should be socially boycotted.

He said the late Jayaprakash Narayan was the last national leader who fought against corruption.

The declaration of Emergency had turned his Survodaya movement into a movement against corruption. He said that corruption was the biggest obstacle on the path of material and cultural progress of our country.

‘’It not only saps the ordinary citizen of his rightful share in the fruits of development but also breeds an atmosphere of cynicism and despair that has deleterious effect on the health of our civil society.” He said that political corruption had reached every nook and corner of the country. When political administrators became corrupt, it was not surprising to find that the bureaucrats were also corrupt.

“Political corruption cannot survive without the active support of the bureaucratic corruption.”
