Kozhikode: The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is planning to start its classes next academic year at the institute’s centre that is coming up in Kannur. Industries Minister Elamaram Karim and a delegation from NIFT led by Director Kalpana Swami held discussions on the project in Kozhikode on Saturday. At the talks, the Minister offered to make all arrangements to enable the institute to commence classes from next academic year. The institute director expressed the hope that it would be possible to start the classes next academic year at a temporary venue. Both the Minister and the delegation said the opening of the centre in Kannur would give a fillip to the development of textiles industry in north Kerala. The Minister assured the NIFT delegation of full government support for the institute’s centre. The government would provide all basic facilities for the project. The NIFT team had visited the site proposed by the State government for its centre near the Kannur Government Engineering College at Mangattuparamba. In Kannur, the delegation held discussions with representatives of Kerala Textiles Exporters Association, North Malabar Chamber of Commerce, Handloom Cooperative Society and handloom textiles businessmen. Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) Managing Director A.S. Suresh Babu; Kinfra Apparel Park Managing Director J. Krishnakumar and NIFT’s Banagalore centre director Devadas were present at the discussions with the ries Minister in Kozhikode on Saturday.
