Demands galore: The State president of Tamil Nadu Multi-purpose Health Workers and Maternity Assistants Union, L. Vijayalakshmi, addressing a meeting in Tirunelveli on Saturday. TIRUNELVELI: The Tamil Nadu Multi-Purpose Health Workers’ and Maternity Assistants’ Union has urged the Government to rechristen the name, ‘multi-purpose health workers and maternity assistants,’ as ‘urban health nurses.’ Its ‘Mupperum Vizha’ held here on Saturday stressed the need to promote them without training, as being done in the case of ‘village health nurses.’ Grade II status should be given to those multi-purpose health workers and maternity assistants who have completed 10 years of service while Grade I be given to those who had put in 20 years of service. Besides providing ‘Job Chart’ to multi-purpose health workers and maternity assistants, works other than official duty should not be assigned to them. Sixth Pay Commission recommendations should be extended to them. Compensation leave facility for working on government holidays should be given to them and they should be treated as government employees. Official flayedThe union condemned the Tuticorin Municipal Commissioner Lakshmi for allegedly deducting a day’s salary from the pay of those subjected to sexual harassment by some personnel of the local body. While thanking the Commissioner for Municipal Administration Niranjan Mardi for taking action against those who were involved in the sexual harassment, they said the Tuticorin Municipal Commissioner deducted salary without giving any notice or memo to the affected. If the deducted salary was not released immediately, demonstrations would be staged in front of all seven Regional Municipality Offices in the State, they said. The State president, L. Vijayalakshmi, presided over the function, which was inaugurated by R. Seetharaman, State general secretary of the Confederation of Corporation and Municipality Officials’ Union. Multi-purpose health workers and maternity assistants from Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar districts participated in the function.
