NEW DELHI: Top seed D. Harika kept alive her chances of a medal at the expense of teammate Eesha Karavade in the girls’ ninth round of the World junior chess championship at Yerevan, Armenia, on Friday. Harika’s 35-move victory with black pieces raised her tally to 7.5 points. She remained in the second place, half a point behind leader Vera Nebolsina. The Russian girl defeated Sabrina Vega on the top board. Among the boys, Parimarjan Negi drew with Russian third seed Ivan Popov to reach six points. He was joined by G. N. Gopal and Abhijeet Gupta who won their games with white pieces. Top seed Wang Hao defeated Egypt’s Ahmed Adly and joined him in the lead at seven points. Four more rounds remain. The results (ninth round, involving Indians): Open: Parimarjan Negi (6) drew with Ivan Popov (Rus, 6); Aswin Jayaram (5) lost to Markus Ragger (Aut, 6); G. N. Gopal (6) bt Marcos Llaneza (Esp, 5); Abhijeet Gupta (6) bt Fidel Corrales (Cub, 5); Deepan Chakkravarthy ( 5.5) bt Pablo Garcia (Chi, 4.5); Arun Karthik (3.5) drew with Robert Hovhannisyan (Arm, 3.5); Abhishek Das (3.5) bt Mahmoud Shamieh (Lib 2.5). Girls: Eesha Karavade (6) lost to D. Harika (7.5); Soumya Swaminathan (5) lost to Elena Tairova (Rys, 6); Mary Ann Gomes (5) lost to Gulmira Dauletova (Kaz, 6); P. Priya (5.5) bt Ghazal Hakimifard (Iri, 4.5); Padmini Rout (5) bt Anna Hairapetian (Arm, 4.5).
