LONDON: England allrounder Andrew Flintoff is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the year after undergoing surgery on his left ankle. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Saturday that Flintoff underwent a keyhole operation on his ankle in the Netherlands on Friday, and had been ruled out of an upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. The ECB said Flintoff was also doubtful for a tour of New Zealand starting in February next year. “He will now undergo a period of rest and convalescence followed by a rehabilitation programme,” the ECB said in a statement. “The priority will be for him to regain full fitness ahead of England’s domestic international programme in 2008.” Flintoff has had three previous operations on his ankle — the last one in June. He played in England’s five Twenty20 World Cup games in South Africa, but had been troubled by his ankle since a one-day series against India in September. — AP
