NEW DELHI: With the onset of the festive season, the Capital’s power distribution companies have set up special teams to keep up vigil on public functions where chances of power pilferage are high. As the city gears up for Durga Puja, Ramlila, Dussehra and Diwali, the power discoms have put their teams on high alert. “To crack down on the menace, 60 special teams, 30 each for BRPL and BYPL, are on high alert and keeping a strict vigil on these functions. Any organisers caught stealing power will be booked under the Indian Electricity Act, 2003, guidelines,” warned a BSES official. Offenders are liable to face penalties of up to 24 times their connected load besides facing up to three years in jail. “Hassle-free arrangements have been made to give on-the-spot temporary connections. We have written to the organisers of these melas and the residents’ welfare associations requesting them to take bona fide legal temporary connections,” the official said. Last year, BSES had caught 15 organisers of Ramlilas stealing over 1,100 kW of power. “Keeping in mind the festive season, BSES has arranged for 100 MW of power on a day-ahead basis from Andhra Pradesh. This power will be available till December-end. BSES will soon start getting an additional 160-200 MW power during the festival season. BSES has also pressed into service 33 hydraulic tower wagons, 110 breakdown restoration vans and four diesel generating sets.”
