Prayers, charity mark Id-ul-Fitr

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Muslims across the district celebrated Id-ul-Fitr (Cheriya Perunnaal) on Saturday, marking the conclusion of the month of fasting and prayers.

Prayers, feasting and relief activities marked the celebrations. Thousands of Muslims offered Id namaz at Id- gahs in the city and exchanged greetings.

Large gatherings were present for the Id namaz at the Putherikandam Maidan, the mosques at Manacaud and Kesavadasapuram, specially-arranged Id gahs and at prayer halls at various places. Charity organisations held functions to distribute Ramzan kits to the needy. The State committee of the Islamic Peace Movement of India observed Id-ul-Fitr as Friendship Solidarity Day. The Id namaz at the Putharikandam maidan was marked by the release of an Id friendship message to be sent to Hindu temples and Christian churches across the State. President of the Peace Movement Kazhakuttam Najmuddin released the message by handing over a copy to KTDC chairman Cheriyan Philip. In his address, Mr. Philip hoped the initiative would help restore the broken bonds of love and understanding.

Inaugurating a unity meet organised by the movement, the former Union Minister S. Krishnakumar reminded the faithful that the spirit of sacrifice imbibed through the Ramzan month embodied the message of humanity. President of the organisation Najmuddin presided. Father Immanuel Kaniyanvalappil, Fr. Varghese Irakkathil, Swamy Veerendran and Imam Panipra Ibrahim Baqavi participated.

An amity meet was the highlight of the Id-ul-Fitr celebrations organised by the People’s Charitable Foundation and the C.H. Mohammed Koya National Foundation. KTDC chairman Cheriyan Philip inaugurated the meet.

K.P. Sankaradas, S.M. Siddique, S. Prasannakumari Amma and Bijukumar also addressed the gathering.

Id relief was distributed to needy families at a function held at Kazhakuttam. University Registrar K.A. Shahim inaugurated the function.

M. Ahmed Pillai distributed aid packets to the beneficiaries. Kazhakuttam Jama ath president Asanarupillai Alsaj, member Nawaz, Francis Varghese and Karichana Hamsa were among those who were present.

Head of the Ekalavya Ashram Swami Aswathy Tirunal inaugurated an Id amity meet organised by the C.H. Mohammed Koya National Foundation.
