TAMBARAM: Passengers of a Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus stopped the vehicle near the old Chennai Airport at Meenambakkam Saturday evening and handed over the driver to the police on charges of rash driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Meenambakkam police detained the driver, P.Sivakumar, 38, attached to the Tambaram Depot on charges that included drunken driving, creating nuisance and rash driving.
Medical tests
Doctors at the Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital (Chromepet GH) and police personnel at the Meenambakkam police station said medical tests and preliminary investigations confirmed that Sivakumar was under the influence of alcohol.
Sivakumar drove a vestibule bus – route No. E 18 from the Guduvanchery bus terminus – at 2.10 p.m.
The bus was on its way to Broadway.
Skipped stops
The driver skipped some stops and travelled at a breakneck speed on arterial Grand Southern Trunk Road, the passengers told the Meenambakkam police.
There were more than 50 passengers in the bus.
