“Interests of Amaravathy farmers will be protected”

Staff Reporter

KARUR: The concerns of farmers of the Amaravathy, Noyyal and Bhavani ayacut in Karur, Erode and Coimbatore districts will be highlighted at the appropriate forum. Their demand for including the irrigation needs of perennial crops and sugar cane, betel vine, turmeric and banana raised in the region, between the Mettur dam and the Upper Anicut, will be addressed, according to Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association general secretary Mannaragudi S. Ranganathan.

Addressing a meeting of the farmer leaders of these districts at Thottakurichi near here on Saturday, Mr. Ranganathan underlined the need for all sections of farmers to work united to achieve their goals in the Cauvery water dispute. He invited the regional farmers to more actively involve themselves in the Cauvery Family deliberations.“The Cauvery Family is an inclusive institution and works for the welfare of all stakeholders. The talks has so far spread enormous confidence among farmers of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the fruits of which should be harvested and savoured by farmers of all regions,” Mr. Ranganathan said.

Mr. Ranganathan said the interests of the annual crop growers in the region between the Mettur dam and the Upper Anicut should be safeguarded, and called upon the sugar mills in the region to fight alongside the farmers in their command areas to get their share of water.

Cauvery Family Coordinator S. Janakarajan, a guest of honour, said the important objective of the Cauvery Family was to resolve the primary dispute of sharing the Cauvery water among the contesting riparian States. Once it was achieved, intra-State issues of pollution, cropping pattern, water-saving methods and head and tile-end area problems could be sorted out.

Farmers from various irrigation channel and river ayacut associations participated in the daylong talks. Their primary concern was “perceived” neglect of their interests in the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal verdict. Mr. Ranganathan and Dr. Janakarajan assured them that the regional interests would never be sacrificed.

Joint secretary Kulithalai A.V. Gopaladesikan and president Lalgudi G. Kanagasabhai spoke.
