Former SC judge Sarkaria dead
Chandigarh: The former Supreme Court judge, Justice Ranjit Singh Sarkaria, who defined Centre-State relations for over two decades, died after a prolonged illness here on Friday. He was 91.
The former Chairman of the Press Council of India, who was visiting his sister, was admitted to a local hospital after complaining of breathlessness. He died around 11 p.m., his family said.
Mr. Sarkaria was cremated on Saturday with full state honours with a Punjab Police contingent giving him a reverse gun salute.
Born on January 16, 1916, Mr. Sarkaria was educated at Mahendra College in Patiala and earned an LLB from Lahore.
He began his career as an advocate from the Patiala High Court in 1940 and was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court in September 1973 and retired in 1981.
He headed the committee to study Centre-State relations in 1983 during the tenure of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and and submitted his report in 1988. — PTI
