Pratibha Patil’s concern over Vidarbha farmers’ distress
AMRAVATI: On her first visit to her hometown of Amravati since getting elected to the top post, President Pratibha Patil on Saturday night termed the spate of suicides by farmers in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra as a matter of great concern.
Replying to a civic reception accorded by the Congress-ruled Amravati Municipal Corporation, Ms. Patil said suicides by farmers were unfortunate as they did not solve problems.
She said she had discussed the issue with Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra authorities and suggested a few measures for effective implementation of the Prime Minister’s financial package to bail out the farmers and curb suicides.
Bihar Governor R.S. Gavai presided over the felicitation. Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and his deputy R.R. Patil were among those present.
