NEW DELHI: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has entered into a partnership with multinational company Alstom for making a debut in super critical plant technology that will enable the company to produce 1,000 MW capacity power plants. BHEL had, till date, been manufacturing 800 MW power plants and its decision to foray into the super critical sector is based on the challenging targets that have been set for capacity addition during the XI Plan. With the entry of Ultra Mega Power Projects concept and private players opting for mega power plants in the hydro sector also, BHEL has decided to grab the opportunity and prepare itself for future challenges. According to BHEL Chairman and Managing Director, Ashok K. Puri, a strategy paper had been drawn up by the company to keep pace with the changing times and environment. He said the company had entered into a working relationship with French based company, Alstom, that specialises in high capacity power plant technology. The company was also looking for more strategic partners in the power equipment manufacturing area. At the same time, BHEL was on the lookout for acquiring companies in India and abroad and asserted that the recent memorandum of understanding with the leading power generation company National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) was aimed at working closely to meet the challenges. Mr. Puri said that keeping in mind the expected demand during the XI and XII Plans, BHEL had changed its priorities. Instead of achieving 15,000 MW capacity at the end of the XI Plan from the present 6,000 MW, it had been decided to enhance the target further and achieve 20,000 MW capacity by 2011-12. Elaborating on the NTPC-BHEL MoU, Mr. Puri said a new company would be formed that would take up projects and biddings. We are confident of meeting the challenges posed by the XI Plan target of adding 78,000 MW of capacity,” he said.
