Lawyers petition President

Staff Correspondent

TUMKUR: Led by L.R. Narayanachar, a group of lawyers from Tumkur, on Sunday, sent a petition to President Pratibha Patil, seeking her “immediate intervention” to stop payment of bills to contractors. The contractors had been awarded 120 works worth Rs. 54 crore by the Tumkur City Municipal Council (CMC). Releasing copies of the petition to presspersons, Mr. Narayanachar said: “We had to approach the President as our efforts to stall the payment with the Governor have been futile.” He said the State Government released a grant of Rs. 54 crore to the Tumkur CMC in early September. The elections to the body were held on September 28.

The results were declared two days later. Even as the election was in process, the officials invited tenders and entrusted the works to the contractors.
