BJP sure of midterm elections in 2008

Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: Bharatiya Janata Party former president and MP M. Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday said midterm elections were inevitable in 2008 notwithstanding Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s ‘U turn’ with the Left parties over the nuclear deal with the United States.

The Government had lost the credibility and turned into a ‘laughing stock’ for going back on its words after shouting from rooftops that it was firm on implementation of nuclear deal with the US, he told reporters. He said: “Whatever happened is only a commercial break. The real drama will start after sometime.”

Mr. Naidu said the UPA Government was plagued by inherent contradictions and declared that the BJP and its allies were fully geared up to face elections anytime. “Only we (BJP) can provide a viable alternative,” he said and claimed that Assembly elections in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka would be a pointer to their growing popularity.

Reading out newspaper reports on the statements of UPA leaders on the nuclear issue, he quoted the Prime Minister as saying on August 1: “I told them it is not possible to renegotiate the deal. It’s a honourable deal. The Cabinet has approved it. We cannot go back on it. I told them to do whatever they want to do, if they want to withdraw support, so be it…”
