ACA to launch women inter-school cricket tourney

VIJAYAWADA: Keen to promote women’s cricket, the executive committee of Andhra Cricket Association on Sunday has decided to launch inter-school competitions in all the affiliated associations under the supervision of the coordinators of the women’s cricket.

The necessary expenditure for the competitions would be funded by the ACA.

A decision was also taken to earmark Rs. 10 crore for the construction of the cricket stadium at Amaravathi Township in Mangalagiri.

“ACA vice-president Gokaraju Ganga Raju will supervise the construction activities,” said ACA secretary V. Chamundeswaranath.

In place of the present ACA- VDCA stadium committee at Vizag, a new governing body was constituted with former ACA president D.V. Subba Rao as chairman and ACA patron Mr. L. V. Subrahmanyam as vice-chairman.

The other members are S.L. Narayana Rao (president), V. Chamundeswaranath ( secretary), P. Appalaraju ( treasurer), A. Prasanna Kumar (president, Vizag Cricket Club), D.S. Varma (vice-president, Vizag District Cricket Association), S. Satish Babu (East Godavari Cricket Association), P.R. Narayanaswamy (ACA vice-president), president and secretary of Vizag District Cricket Association.

A separate committee was also constituted under the chairmanship of L. V. Subrahmanyam to oversee the installation of the floodlights and scoreboards at ACA-VDCA stadium at Vizag as per the specifications of International Cricket Council (ICC). Incidentally, ACA-VDCA stadium was accorded the Test status by ICC recently.

The meeting also ratified the appointment of M. N. Ravi Kumar as the selection committee chairman of under-17. replacing M.S. Kumar, who has been appointed as the administrative manager of Andhra Ranji team for the year 2007-2008.
