This Day That Age
Mr. C. Rajagopalachari said in Madras on October 11 that there was no ‘inconsistency’ in his attitude to Hindi. Answering the criticism as to why Rajaji, who advocated learning of Hindi years ago, had now changed his view and said it should not be imposed upon the people, the elder statesman said it was the same ‘concern’ for the people that made him tell them 40 years ago that they ought to learn Hindi, that now made him stand up against “my friends in the upper India and say ‘You cannot enforce this oppressive measure.” Rajaji, who was addressing the students of the Madras Christian College, Tambaram, said there was only “consistency on my part in the matter of my affection for the people.”
