Disappointing

The Congress has thrown in the towel and signalled its readiness to put the nuclear deal on the backburner to save the government. The deal was finalised after long and assiduous negotiations with the U.S. to rescue India from nuclear isolation. It is not just the Prime Minister but the entire country, with very few exceptions, that is thoroughly disappointed.

The UPA government has demonstrated that it wants to retain power at all costs.

By backtracking on the nuclear deal, and earlier on the Ramar Sethu issue, it has proved that it is unsure of itself.

Of course, no coalition can be a ‘one-issue government.’ Nor can it be a government that allows itself to be persistently pressured by its partners or supporters. The UPA government’s latest stand appears to be just one more attempt at survival.

The Prime Minister has proved that he is more of a politician. It was least expected of a statesman to sacrifice long-term economic benefits for political interests.

The Congress might have proved that it is open to others’ ideas and wants to take its allies and partners along. But its climb-down also shows that it was unable to convince the Left parties of the benefits of the nuclear deal. It has weakened the people’s faith in the government.
