‘Hoovina Kolu’ is a bunch of jasmine woven around a kalasha The carrier of the ‘kolu’ is supposed to be a student of Yakshagana BANGALORE: Come Navratri and you get to see some of the old customs and traditions making the rounds of residential areas. One of the forgotten customs is the “Hoovina Kolu”, a scholarship programme for children who are learning Yakshagana, the folk tradition of the coastal region. This tradition had been in practice in the coastal areas particularly in the northern side of Udupi district around Brahmavar, Saligrama, Thekkatte, Sasthana and Kundapur. These areas have produced great scholars such as Jnanapith award winner, the late Kota Shivarama Karanth, Bhadragiri Achutadas and Keshavadas, the late Kalinga Navada and others. The “Hoovina Kolu” is a symbol of scholarship. Each young student of Yakshagana will hold “Hoovina Kolu” which is a bunch of jasmine woven around a decorated kalasha. The carrier of this “kolu” is supposed to be a student of Yakshagana and he should be encouraged by the people. These students perform a few Yakshagana episodes in front of the houses in their villages for which they are given some money wrapped in betel leaves by the elders in the house. The students usually wear traditional clothes and are accompanied by other artistes like the arthadharis (interpretor) tala maddale (musicians) and the bhagavata (singer). This Navratri, the “Hoovina Kolu” will be taken around some chosen localities in the city by the Yakshagana students. According to the secretary of the Karnataka Kala Darshini Shrinivas Sasthan since the city is big, the students will give performances on invitation. To invite them to your house call 9844032972 or 23206895.
