Collection of Kannada stories

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Agni Karya , a collection of Kannada stories by Srinivasa Vaidya, was released here on Sunday.

The word Agni Karya signifies a daily ritual. However, a story with the same name narrates the tale of a young boy who accidentally kills a man and runs away from home.

When the dead man’s son grows up, he and his mother go to Haridwar to perform the annual rituals of his father.

They meet a Kannadiga “purohit” there whom the mother suspects to be the killer of her husband. The “purohit”, however, denies the charge and conducts the rituals.

Mr. Vaidya, correlates the ritual to the happenings in the family and narrates how the killer himself conducted the rituals of the person whom he had killed.

Agni Karya is one of the five stories in the collection which was released by writer Jayanth Kaikini.

Mr. Vaidya, who is a humourist, said that every humourist has to turn towards serious writing at one point of time.

The other stories in the collection are Hanategalu, Mattondu Haleya Kathe, Rudra Prayaga and Saha Prayana.
