‘Take dental care to villages’

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: Anil Kohli, president of Dental Council of India (DCI), has said that there is a need to evolve a policy on oral health to ensure that all people get access to dental care, and review the policy towards dental education accreditation for improving the quality of dental education.

He was speaking at the first graduation ceremony of A.J. Institute of Dental Sciences here on Sunday.

Dr. Kohli said the policy towards dental education accreditation should be modified to govern the dental education qualitatively for the next 20 years. The standard of education should be made applicable to graduate, postgraduate and para-dental courses, continuing dental education, clinical fellowship training and other programmes related to dentistry, he added.

“I am pained when I learn that our dental surgeons have to work as dental nurses abroad. I hold ourselves responsible for not having world-class institutions. Such institutions can earn recognition to provide our young dental surgeons a deferential start,” he said.

P.S. Prabhakaran, Vice-Chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, said that rural areas in the country were deprived of dental care facilities. Young dentists should think of taking dental care to villages.
