Aviation fuel leak plugged

Efforts on to identify source, say IOC officials

HYDERABAD: The discharge of aviation fuel from the drain into public areas near Begumpet airport has been completely stopped, and a special team of Indian Oil Corporation is continuing its efforts to identify the source of leakage, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has informed.

General Manager of Indian Oil (AP) M. Ramana in a release informed that barriers were put up at the spot to prevent the outflow of fuel-mixed-water into public areas. With fuel not being allowed to flow into the drain, officials were now in the process of identifying the exact source of leakage.

The IOC also sought to assure that there was no danger to the general public since the flow of fuel into the drain had been completely stopped and the situation was under control. A dedicated team was keeping a close tab of the situation on a daily basis.

CS briefed

A high-level IOC team led by GM (Aviation) and GM (Safety) from its Mumbai head office joined the investigation team and met Chief Secretary J. Harinarayana to update him on the situation. Efforts were on to locate the source of leakage, officials informed him.

The process of identifying the source of leak would take some time since it had to be traced by the process of elimination.

The team assured the State Government that investigation would continue until the source of the leakage was located.

Joint investigation

IOC and Bharat Petroleum, the two companies having aviation fuel stations inside the airport, have jointly launched this investigation to trace the source of leakage. Once the flow of fuel into the drain was stopped with the help of barriers, the fuel pipelines were dug up for checking; however, pipeline leakage from the storage facility was ruled out.
