Latest technology: Short Messaging Service used for dissemination of information. —

COIMBATORE: For cell phone users among college and high school students, here is something to look forward to. A bunch of engineering students in the city has revolutionised the idea of short messaging service to “Smart Messaging Service.” They have designed the module for a mobile encyclopaedia (Mpedia) which sends nuggets of information to all numbers that have registered with it. And, the information varies from the latest developments in science and technology to finance, current events, tips to handle interviews and general aptitude. In addition to that, an English word is introduced with the meaning and usage every day.

The service already has about 1,500 registered members, mostly among the student community.

“We have developed this module for the benefit of the student community,” says Karthik Loganathan, a III year Mechanical Engineering student at the Coimbatore Institute of Technology, and Vivek Ramaswamy, a III year Mechanical Engineering student of PSG College of Technology. These two are among the six students who formed the group.

“The registered members need not pay for the SMSes and some of the information will definitely stick on to their minds,” Karthik says.

The registered members have the option of selecting the type of message they receive. It can be an instant flash message that doesn’t spam the inbox or the standard SMS. The members can also submit their own messages, which will be screened by the Mpedia team and sent to all the other members.

MDictionary

The Mpedia team is also planning to start an MDictionary, a similar initiative through which the meaning and usage of English words can be obtained by sending an SMS.

The others in the Mpedia team are J.Arvind, III year student of Electronics and Instrumentation, Amrita College of Engineering, S.Ramani, III year Mechanical Engineering, PSG College of Technology, M.Vivek, III year Biomedical Engineering student at the Vinayaka Missions, Salem, and Anmol Vij, III year B.Tech Information Technology at Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology.

The idea behind the mobile encyclopaedia is to increase awareness on a variety of subjects including finance and current affairs.

Those who wish to register to Mpedia can send it as: join mpedia 9789483333 as SMS. Or log on to www.joinmpedia.com.
