Festive atmosphere in several areas as families exchange greetings The moon was sighted in the evening on Saturday
PEACE BE UPON YOU: At the Idgah Maidan on Mysore Road in Bangalore on Sunday. BANGALORE: Muslims offered prayers as part of Id-ul-Fitr that was celebrated with pomp and gaiety on Sunday. Special prayers were organised at several mosques in the city. There was a large gathering at the Idgah Maidan in Chamarajpet where the young and the old alike offered prayers in the morning. The former Chief Minister, H.D. Kumaraswamy, and the former Minister, B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan, also joined those offering prayers at the maidan. There was similar attendance at the other maidans in the city, including those on Miller’s Road, Mysore Road and Jayanagar. In Shivajinagar, Muslims offered prayers in the mosques that dot the area. There was festive atmosphere in several areas where families exchanged greetings and sweets. Muslim families in Bangalore had been preparing to celebrate Ramzan for the last three days. They were ready to celebrate the festival on Friday, but the New Moon Committee could not sight the moon following which a message was transmitted to all the mosques in Bangalore that the festivities would begin only with the sighting of the moon. The situation was the same on Saturday too. However, with the moon being sighted in the evening on Saturday, Muslims went on a shopping spree the same night, and the festival was celebrated on Sunday. Meanwhile, police sources said that the Id celebrations across the city went off peacefully. The police had made elaborate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident. Traffic was regulated near mosques and maidans.
