CROWD-PULLER: The Qawwali artiste from Mumbai in action at a show in Bangalore on Sunday. BANGALORE: It was a perfect start for the Qawwali programme on the day of Id-ul-Fitr. For, Qawwali singer Salim Javed started his concert with “Nathiya Kalam” sung in praise of the Prophet, which was received well by the audience at the Garuda Mall. The Qawwali programme was organised as a part of the Id celebrations. For over an hour, Mr. Salim Javed and his troupe kept the audience engrossed in this form of music, popularised by Sufi saints in the Indian sub-continent. Opening with “Nathiya Kalam”, Salim Javed started with a note on the universal brotherhood and the unity of the country, which evoked a round of applause from the audience. He also sang a few ghazals. The programme also featured four contestants of Voice of Bangalore, a contest held recently by Radio City in association with Garuda Mall. The contestants, Supriya, Divya, Aniketh and Raghunath Jha, also gave Qawwali performance with songs such as “Hai Agar Dushman”, “Duma Dum”, Hasta Hua Noorani Chehra”, “Isharon Kho Agar Samjho” and “Sarforsh Ki Tamanna”. Qawwali programmes, it is learnt, see good attendance in Bangalore and are held during the “Sandal” programmes, festivals and some marriages. A resident of Hoskote, near here, Samir Asad said: “I came to the city from Hoskote only for the programme as Salim Javed is a noted singer.” He said, “Interest in Qawwali is on the rise in Bangalore.”
