Bangalore: Microsoft Research announced here on Friday a sponsored research and collaboration agreement with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), to increase computational power in scientific and engineering research. This is the first agreement Microsoft Research has signed in India, as part of a global effort to collaborate with leading institutions. Under the agreement, Microsoft has committed itself to providing funding and research expertise to assist major projects which involves high-performance computing, such as modelling of the Indian Ocean, over the next two to three years. Prof. Nagasuma Chandra, faculty of bioinformatics at IISc, will be the chief investigator collaborating with Microsoft for the biological data mapping projects. The goal of the project is to create research tools for integration of biological data, to better understand biological systems, along with applications in many stages of drug and vaccine delivery, he said. Prof. R. Govindarajan of Supercomputer Education and Research Centre at IISc will lead the second project on high-performance applications using commodity clusters. Associate Director of IISc Prof. N. Balakrishnan said: “Scientific research requires tremendous computational power and data management technologies.” “With assistance from Microsoft Research, we can reduce the time needed for scientific discovery and better drive innovations,” he added.
