School notes

World Ahimsa Day celebrated

The All-India Karuna International–Thanjavur Kendra and Shri Venkateswara Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Thanjavur, jointly celebrated World Ahimsa Day, World Animal Day and World Vegetarian Day on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi.

The students garlanded the Gandhi statue at the Thanjavur Municipal Office and took the untouchability oath.

They also took part in a rally, which was flagged off by S. P. Balasubramanium, the president of the Thanjavur Karuna Kendra.

The Educational Officer of Karuna International – Chennai Kendra, M.C. Appandai Raj was the chief guest for the function and spoke on the importance of being a vegetarian.

Elocution, drawing and essay writing competitions were held as part of the celebrations and Mr. Balasubramanium gave away the prizes.

The Principal of the school, S. Gowri and Academic Director, G. Jaishankar were present on the occasion.

LIC donates tri-cycle

As part of ‘Insurance Week’ celebrations, the Pudukottai branch of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) donated a tri-cycle to K. Karpagam, a Plus Two student of Raniar Government Higher Secondary School in Pudukottai, recently. The Senior Divisional Manager, LIC, Thanjavur Division, K. Rajivan Nair, gave away the tri-cycle in the presence of LIC officials.

DBTR School wins trophy

Vivekananda College of Arts and Science for Women at Sirkazhi in Nagapattinam district conducted an inter-school sports competition recently for “Quanta Rolling Trophy” for school students of Mayiladuturai educational district.

A large number of students from eight schools took part. D.B.T.R. National Higher Secondary School, Mayiladuthurai, won the `Quanta Rolling Trophy’.

The team from Government Higher Secondary School, Kariyampattinam, won the trophy for kho-kho and St. Paul Girls Higher Secondary School, Mayiladuthurai, won the first prize for volleyball.

Anitha Radhakrishnan, college Director, lighted the Olympic lamp and Murugavel, Inspector of Police, Sirkazhi, inaugurated the competition. K.V. Radhakrishnan, chairman of the college, distributed prizes to the winners.

DBTR enters inter-zonal final

D.B.T.R. National Higher Secondary School, Mayiladuthurai, has qualified for the inter-zonal final of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) under-17 inter-school cricket tournament for the Boost Cricket Cup.

Having emerged victorious from the Nagapattinam district, the school overcame some stiff challenges from the winners of Tiruchi district – Srirangam Boys HSS and Pudukottai district – Government Model Higher Secondary School to qualify for the inter-zonal final.

The Assistant Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), D. Julius Vijayakumar commended the efforts of the students.

Essay contest held

The Karur Police conducted an essay writing competition for students on the topic ‘People’s role in preventing road accidents’ and an elocution contest on the topic ‘People’s role in preventing crime.’

Students from 10 schools in the district took part. M. Geetha, a standard XI student of Sarada Girls Higher Secondary School, Pasupathypalayam, won the first prize in essay writing. Udayakumar (standard XII) of Corporation HSS and V. Renganayagi (standard. XII) of St. Theresa Girls HSS finished second and third respectively.

M. Vigneshwaran (standard XII) of Corporation HSS won the first prize in elocution competition.

Sasikala (standard XII) Government HSS, Thanthonimalai, and Krithika (standard XI) of Government Girls HSS secured the second and third place respectively. Superintendent of Police K. Shanmugavel gave away the prizes.

Students visit Mukkombu

Members of the Boys’ Club, a unit formed by the Police department in Pudukottai to benefit students belonging to the economically weaker sections, visited Mukkombu, near Tiruchi on Sunday. Accompanied by the police officials, they spent a few hours at this tourism centre. They also visited the Anna Science Centre – Planetarium where they were exposed to the nuances of nature and basic principles of astronomy.
