CHENGAM: Empowering Mahilas for Meaningful Action (EMMA) — a non-governmental organisation — at Chengam has ensured job opportunities to 30 women of Pakkripalayam panchayat through training in embroidery.
A.Adbul Sukkur, Chief Executive Officer, EMMA, talking to The Hindu said the women of Pakkripalayam had completed three months’ training in embroidery. The women are now getting orders for embroidery related works from Tiruvannamalai, Chengam and Pakkripalayam. They have also been getting adequate orders from major cities including Mumbai.
Initially, the NGO decided to target Muslim women of the village for the training programme. All women trained in embroidery were previously engaged in rolling beedis.
Mr. Sukkur said the training programme had given an opportunity for the 30 women to work from their homes. Each of them was now in a position to earn Rs.1,000 a month. The cost of the training programme was borne by Chengam Panchayat Union chairman G.Kumar.
Mr.Sukkur said that now there were plans to extend the training programme to other places. The trained women of Pakkripalayam would be resource persons for the training in other panchayats.
EMMA’s Chief Executive Officer said that at present the NGO planned to extend the training to Puludiyur, Thukkapettai, Chengam, Millet Nagar and Dalavanaickenpettai. Each batch would have 20 women.
