Kovalam awaits better tourist facilities

Staff Reporter

Only two weeks remain for the peak tourist season

Kovalam: Tan-seekers have started trickling into the crescent-shaped Eve’s and Light House beaches of the famed beach resort here. But the authorities are in no hurry to provide even the basic infrastructure facilities for these tourists.

Hardly two weeks are left for the peak tourist season and arrival of the first chartered flight from the United Kingdom. Dilapidated beach umbrellas, discoloured warning boards of Kerala Tourism, crumbled walkways and non-functional streetlights are likely to greet these tourists in the resort. The police aid-post set up in the middle of the Light House beach and close to the walkway has disappeared in the monsoon fury. The facilitation complex set up by Kerala Tourism in the resort is yet to be opened for the tourists. Other problems dogging the beach resort include poor drainage and erratic power and drinking water supply.

Except a little stretch near the Edakkal rocks, the Light House beach is out of bounds for tourists, with waves still spilling onto the pathway in many areas. A senior tourism official said it is for the local panchayat to take necessary steps to ensure that the streetlights in the region glow. “They have informed that the estimate for the work has been taken,” he said.

The department has also decided to convene a meeting of the Kovalam Development Agency later this month. It will be chaired by Minister for Tourism Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.
