HYDERABAD: Twenty five-year-old army officer Elena Bolsun of Russia became the fastest woman of the meet when she won the women’s 100m sprint with a time of 11.45s in the opening day of the athletic competitions of the 4th Military World Games at the GMC Balayogi stadium on Monday. The Russian athlete surged ahead after about 30m from the start and continued to build up a lead till she finished about one metre ahead of second-placed Moller Weissina Bettina of Austria and third-placed Rorcrynska Daria of Poland both of whom fought out a close battle for the second spot. Damaris Changeiywo of Kenya created a new meet record in the women’s 10,000m by clocking 32m 32.44s. The earlier record was held by Zhor El Kamch (33m 01:29s). Irene Kwambai of Kenya and Nadia Alijufaini of Baharin also bettered the record. In women’s hammer throw, China’s Wenxiu Zhang won the gold by creating another new meet record with a throw of 72.25m. Starting in styleEarlier, China started its campaign in style by winning the first gold medal of the meet in athletics competitions in the morning. Cui Zhide of China won the 20 km walk (Men) in 1hr 23m 43s while Trotski Ivan of Belarus took the silver in 1hr 25m 23.7s and Toth Matej of Slovakia took the bronze with a timing of 1hr 25m 42.7s. The meet record is held by A. Fadejevs of Latvania with a timing of 1hr 21m 42s. Indian men loseChina defeated India in straight sets in the men’s preliminary round of volleyball. In a crucial Pool ‘B’ match at Yousufguda Indoor Stadium, China outplayed India 28-26, 25-22, 25-18. A strong Indian team started well and put up a good fight in the keenly contested first set which it lost narrowly 28-26. India took the lead in the second set 13-10 but faltered at crucial moments losing the second set 25-22 to let the Chinese go 2-0 up in the match. In the third set, the Chinese played superbly to win it 25-18. World and Olympic champion Brazil defeated Latvia 25-23, 25-22, 24-26, 25-16. Lithuania winsLithuania defeated Turkey 27-24 in the first round of the men’s handball competitions.
