Probe into RO plants sought

Staff Reporter

There are six dysfunctional plants in Alappuzha town

Poor maintenance: KWA officials

ALAPPUZHA: The former MP and AITUC State general secretary T.J. Anjalose has demanded a vigilance inquiry into the alleged improper functioning of Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants in the town.

Reacting to a report in these columns on the issue, Mr. Anjalose demanded a comprehensive inquiry into the functioning of the six RO plants in the town which were established using funds from the Tourism Department and the local MLA’s funds during the previous government’s tenure following widespread complaints of high fluoride content in water here.

“When the authorities have put up boards announcing treated and purified water at these RO plants, supply of contaminated water when these plants are not functioning properly is nothing but deceit,” he said in a statement released here on Tuesday.

Pointing out that the improper functioning of the RO plants was due to the low standards of the machines and the failure of the authorities to ensure quality machinery to handle such sensitive public services, Mr. Anjalose also called for inquiries into the setting up of these plants.

The Hindu, on October 11, had reported that there were widespread complaints from the public over the quality of the water supplied through the RO plants and that the plants were not being maintained properly.

Officials with the Kerala Water Authority here, on condition of anonymity, had also admitted that maintenance of the plants was not happening regularly since they did not have specific funds for the purpose.
