NEW DELHI: The Campus of Open Learning at Delhi University will soon launch vocational courses for its students designed with help from industry to increase their employability. These add-on courses like Business communication skills, Retail marketing and Medical transcription will be announced by mid-November with the idea of preparing the students for their entry into the professional world and equipping them with skills that will be lapped up by the industry. “These programmes will be available to students from any course and any year at both under-graduate and post-graduate levels of the Campus of Open Learning. The Vice-Chancellor has begun an industry-academia initiative for the whole University and these courses will only take that forward,” said Campus of Open Learning director Savita Dutta. “These courses will help the students of distance learning to get a feel of college life and enable them to interact with other students as well as professionals from the industry, which will give them a lot of good exposure,” added Prof. Dutta. The details like fee-structure, content of the courses and faculty members are still being worked out but the new vocational programmes will be conducted in close cooperation with industry leaders like the Confederation of Indian Industries. Classes will be held at the proposed Centre for Professional and Technical Training at Keshavpuram that will be inaugurated shortly. In another new initiative called the “Tutor-Ward Programme”, the Campus of Open Learning will appoint tutors for students of B.A. (Programme) in addition to the existing personal contact programme with the faculty members. Applications will be invited from research students and fresh post-graduates of Delhi University who can tutor the learners through electronic modes of communication like e-mail, telephone and SMS. “This is a pilot project aimed at providing quality assurance to our students. The main communication between the students and their tutors will be through e-mail and telephone but, if required, a meeting can also be fixed between the two as per their convenience,” explained Prof. Dutta.
