NEW DELHI: Taking the first steps towards involving industry in conservation and management of water in the Capital, the Delhi Jal Board signed a memorandum of understanding with the Confederation of Indian Industry here on Tuesday.

The collaboration will see the CII assist the water utility by lending its expertise in the field of water conservation and management.

Suggesting that the Jal Board and the CII collectively draw up guidelines for better water use and management, Chief Minister Sheila Dikhsit said trade and industry should join hands with the Board to promote viable projects and encourage water harvesting.

Speaking at a function, Ms. Dikshit said water conservation was an issue that was yet to strike a chord with many people across the city.

Noting that issues related to conservation of water and its judicious use were often discussed with those who are already making efforts in that direction, Ms. Dikshit said it was imperative to create awareness among the sections that are still ignorant.

“Most of the times we are talking to those who are already converted. We need to go out to those who are not even aware, in unauthorised and unplanned colonies, where people do not even know what water conservation is all about,” she said.

“The Jal Board and the CII will form a joint task force to drive forward the agreed agenda and jointly monitor the activities on a quarterly basis,” said Jal Board Chief Executive Officer Arun Mathur.

Among the suggestions mooted by the CII are efficient water management, leakage detection and reduction, in-house retrofitting and water device labelling.
